Frequently Asked Questions

What does open reed predator call mean?

An open reed call has a flexible reed that is accessible to the user. By changing the position of your lips or teeth along the reed, you can adjust the pitch and character of the sound.

What sounds can be made with the Johnny Stewart Open Reed call?

The call is designed for coyote vocalizations and rabbit and deer distress cries. With practice, you can produce sequences of sounds with varying pitch, length, and intensity.

Is this predator call suitable for beginners?

Yes, but an open reed call requires practice to achieve a consistent and repeatable sound. A call with preset sounds may be easier, but the open reed offers more control and a wider range of tones.

Is the call suitable for attracting foxes or jackals in Estonia?

Distress-like sounds may attract several predator species, but results depend on animal behavior, season, wind, and user technique. The call must be used in accordance with current hunting regulations.

Does the predator call work in wet weather?

The call is moisture-resistant, but water collecting on the open reed may temporarily affect the sound. After use, rinse the call with clean lukewarm water if necessary and let it dry completely.

How to clean an open reed predator call?

Use lukewarm water and avoid strong detergents, solvents, and heat. Do not bend or press the open reed during cleaning, and protect the call from sharp objects during transport.

When is the Johnny Stewart Open Reed the right choice?

This model is suitable for hunters who want to produce a variety of predator and distress sounds of different pitch and intensity with a single call. The open reed gives skilled users more expressive freedom than a fixed or preset sound call. Due to its strong sound output, it is well suited for open terrain and windier conditions.

If you prefer a readily repeatable sound and do not want to spend time practicing blowing technique, the Johnny Stewart 3-N-1 with multiple preset sounds may be a simpler choice. For only rabbit distress cries, a closed reed call specialized for that sound may also be suitable.

Expert recommendation

The strength of an open reed predator call is its flexibility, but for this reason, it is worth practicing in a calm environment before heading out to hunt. Start with low air pressure and move your lips along the reed: generally, lower tones are produced closer to the tip, higher tones closer to the body. Do not pinch the reed hard with your teeth, as this can interrupt the sound or damage the part.

When hunting, start with a quieter, shorter sound sequence. If an animal nearby hears a very loud sound immediately, the unnatural volume may make it cautious. Pause between sequences, constantly monitor wind direction, and keep movement to a minimum. In open terrain, you can gradually increase the volume.

The open reed is more susceptible to damage during transport than a reed fully enclosed in the body. Keep the call in a separate pocket or on a lanyard, and clean and dry it after use.

The Hunter’s Specialties Johnny Stewart Open Reed combines strong sound output, manually adjustable pitch, and a versatile sound repertoire. It is a practical choice for hunters who want a battery-free predator call and are willing to practice their blowing technique to achieve a natural and repeatable sound.
