Frequently asked questions

How should Ballistol Quick Browning be applied?

The metal must be clean, dry and completely free from oil and grease. Apply an even coat to the required area and allow it to react for at least approximately three minutes, until a yellowish-white layer forms. Rinse thoroughly with water, dab the surface dry with a soft cloth and finish immediately with Ballistol Universal Oil or Gunex.

Can it be used on stainless steel?

No. The product is intended for iron and steel containing no more than 3% chromium. Stainless steel normally contains substantially more chromium and cannot be properly blued with this solution.

Is it suitable for aluminium or brass?

No. Ballistol Quick Browning is not intended for aluminium, zinc, copper, brass or bronze. A treatment specifically formulated for the relevant non-ferrous metal must be selected.

Will the solution remove scratches?

No. Cold bluing changes the colour of exposed steel but does not fill deep scratches, dents or uneven metal. Visible surface damage must be prepared appropriately before the bluing solution is applied.

Why must the surface be degreased first?

Even a very thin film of oil or grease can prevent the solution from reacting evenly with the metal. Inadequate degreasing may result in pale areas or an uneven colour. Once degreased, the exposed surface should not be touched with bare fingers.

Must the treated surface be oiled afterwards?

Yes. After the reaction, the surface must be rinsed with water, dried carefully and immediately coated with Ballistol Universal Oil or Gunex. Oiling completes the treatment and helps protect the metal against moisture and corrosion.

What protective equipment is required?

Wear chemical-resistant gloves together with eye and face protection. Work in a well-ventilated area, avoid contact with skin and eyes, and do not inhale vapour. Keep the product locked away from children and prevent its release into the environment. In an emergency, follow the instructions on the label and contact a doctor or poison centre immediately.

When is Ballistol Quick Browning the right choice?

This product is well suited to local bluing damage caused by normal firearm use, cleaning, transportation or the installation of optical equipment. The 50 ml bottle is practical for treating scratches, screws and other limited areas.

A large, heavily rusted or deeply damaged surface may require mechanical preparation and professional hot bluing. Stainless steel, aluminium and non-ferrous components require products formulated specifically for those materials.

Expert recommendation

Consistent results depend primarily on surface preparation. Carefully remove rust and loose remnants of the old finish, then degrease the component thoroughly. Use a clean cloth or applicator for each stage and avoid touching the prepared metal with bare fingers. Test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area before treating a visible surface.

Keep the solution confined to the intended metal area and protect nearby wood, plastic, optical and painted components. Prevent it from entering the bore or firearm mechanism. After rinsing, dry the component completely and coat the new finish immediately with a thin layer of oil. Before using the firearm, confirm that the bore and chamber are clean and dry.

A practical solution for repairing worn bluing

Ballistol Quick Browning 50 ml provides a convenient way to repair worn bluing on iron and compatible steel firearm components without heat or a traditional bluing bath. Thorough degreasing, even application and correct oil treatment are essential for a deep-black and durable finish.
