Frequently asked questions

What colour does Schaftol Premium Gold give the wood?

Premium Gold gives natural wood a warmer golden tint, but the final result depends on the wood species, original colour, absorbency and number of coats. Always test the oil on a small concealed area before treating the entire stock.

Can Premium Gold be mixed with other Schaftol shades?

Yes. The manufacturer specifically recommends Premium Gold for mixing with the other Schaftol colours. It can be used, for example, to make a brown or red-brown shade appear warmer. Mix a small trial quantity first and record the proportions if the same colour will be needed later.

Is Schaftol suitable for varnished or painted stocks?

The oil needs to penetrate the wood. It may not absorb or dry evenly over intact varnish, paint or another sealed coating. It is also not intended for synthetic stocks or non-absorbent laminate surfaces.

How should Schaftol Premium Gold be applied?

Remove dirt, wax and grease, and make sure the wood is dry. Test the oil on a concealed area, then use the foam applicator to apply a thin, even coat in the direction of the grain. Allow it to penetrate, wipe away any unabsorbed residue with a soft lint-free cloth and let the surface dry. Repeat with additional thin coats if required.

Is Premium Gold suitable for dark wood?

Yes, although the golden tint may be subtle on very dark wood. Premium Gold is particularly useful when enhancing warm natural tones or when mixed with a darker Schaftol colour.

Does the oil repair cracks or deep scratches?

No. Schaftol cares for, colours and protects the wood, but it does not bond cracks or fill deep damage. Structural defects must be repaired separately before the oil is applied.

Is Schaftol Premium Gold classified as hazardous?

The manufacturer’s 2023 safety data sheet states that the mixture is not classified as hazardous under the CLP Regulation. Normal precautions still apply: avoid eye contact and ingestion, wash hands after use, and prevent the oil from entering drains or surface water. Store it tightly closed in its original container, away from food and—following the safety data sheet—away from ignition sources.

When is Ballistol Schaftol Premium Gold the right choice?

Premium Gold is well suited to users who want to retain the warm appearance of natural wood, enhance its grain or add a golden tint to light- and medium-coloured stocks. It can be used on new absorbent wood or to refresh an existing oil finish.

Its mixability is also useful when a standard Schaftol shade does not provide the exact colour required. Adding Premium Gold can give Dark Brown or Red Brown a warmer appearance. Choose the Light version when changing the wood’s original colour as little as possible is the main priority.

Expert recommendation

The finished colour is strongly influenced by surface preparation and absorbency. Sanded, worn and end-grain areas can absorb more oil and may become more intensely coloured than the surrounding surface. Apply several very thin coats and remove all residue that the wood does not absorb. This gives better control over the final tone.

Before working on a gun stock, confirm that the firearm is completely unloaded and keep ammunition away from the work area. When practical, remove the wooden component according to the firearm manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the oil away from optics, the internal metal mechanism, synthetic components and intact sealed varnish. Allow the treated surface to dry completely in a clean, dust-free place before reassembling the firearm.
