Frequently asked questions

How does Genuine Oil differ from Tru-Oil?

Genuine Oil is intended to produce a traditional hand-rubbed satin finish. Tru-Oil normally creates a clearer, glossier surface whose sheen can subsequently be reduced with a separate conditioning product.

Does Genuine Oil fill cracks in the stock?

No. The manufacturer states that it fills grain when wet-sanded, meaning fine pores in the wood. Deep cracks, dents and missing material require a suitable wood-repair compound.

Does Genuine Oil change the colour of the wood?

It is not a stain, but an oil finish can deepen the natural wood tone and increase grain contrast. Apply a compatible stain before the oil when a different colour is required.

How should Genuine Oil be applied?

Prepare the wood according to the product instructions and apply a thin, even coat with a clean, lint-free cloth. It may be used with an appropriate fine wet-sanding technique to fill the grain. Allow each coat to dry fully before applying another.

Is Genuine Oil suitable for a synthetic stock?

No. It is formulated for natural wood and may not adhere correctly to synthetic, painted or otherwise non-absorbent surfaces.

How should oily cloths be handled?

Tung oil generates heat while curing, and improperly stored oily cloths can ignite spontaneously. Never leave used cloths crumpled together. Clean and dispose of them immediately in accordance with the safety data sheet and local waste requirements.

Recommended products

  • Gun Stock Wax for routine protection and polishing

  • A stock-sheen restorer or conditioner

  • A complete wooden-stock refinishing kit

  • A walnut touch-up pen for small colour repairs

  • Tru-Oil Stock Finish when a glossy finish is preferred

  • Wood filler for deep dents or cracks

When is Genuine Oil the right choice?

Genuine Oil is particularly suitable when a softer satin sheen and the appearance of a traditional hand-rubbed oil finish are preferred. It is a practical option for restoring a classic hunting rifle, sporting firearm or finely figured wooden stock.

Tru-Oil is more appropriate when a deep gloss or a more strongly built transparent finish is required. A complete refinishing kit is the better choice when the old finish must be removed or when abrasives and other preparation products are also needed.

Expert recommendation

Surface preparation has the greatest effect on the final result. Remove loose old finish, grease and dust, and sand evenly in the direction of the grain. Use the wet-sanding grain-filling method only on properly prepared wood, and do not expect the resulting slurry to repair structural damage.

Apply several very thin coats instead of one heavy layer and allow every coat to dry fully. Work in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. Used oily cloths must be cleaned or disposed of safely and immediately; never leave them crumpled on a workbench or in an ordinary waste bin.

A traditional satin finish for wooden stocks

Birchwood Casey Genuine Oil restores the natural appearance of wooden gun stocks, highlights the grain and creates a classic hand-rubbed satin surface. Its 90 ml bottle is a practical size for one stock or a smaller wood-finishing project.
