Frequently Asked Questions

What sounds can be made with the Johnny Stewart K9 diaphragm call?

The three-reed call is designed to produce raspy distress sounds similar to cottontail rabbits, jackrabbits, and raccoons. The pitch, volume, and rhythm depend on the user's blowing technique.

What does the fang-shaped cut do?

The fang-shaped cut allows the reeds to create a rougher and more intense tone than a straight-cut diaphragm. This makes the K9 model suitable for urgent and powerful distress calls.

Is the K9 Diaphragm suitable for beginners?

Beginners can use the call, but achieving a clean and repeatable sound requires practice. If you prefer an easier option, a hand call with a fixed sound may be a more convenient first choice.

How does the K9 model differ from the Rabbit Frenzy diaphragm call?

The K9 uses three reeds and a fang-shaped cut to create raspier and more powerful sounds. The Rabbit Frenzy model has two reeds and a 45-degree cut, focusing on the higher-pitched distress calls of young rabbits.

How do you clean and store a diaphragm call?

Rinse the call after use with cool or lukewarm clean water and let it dry completely. Store it in a ventilated case and avoid heat, direct sunlight, and strong cleaning agents that can damage latex.

Does the call contain latex?

Yes. The reeds are made from Infinity Latex® material. If you have a known latex allergy or sensitivity, this call is not recommended.

When is the Johnny Stewart K9 Diaphragm the right choice?

The K9 Diaphragm is suitable for hunters who want a raspy and powerful prey distress call instead of a high and thin sound. The three reeds and fang-shaped cut give experienced users the ability to vary the intensity, rhythm, and tone, while keeping both hands free.

If you mainly need a high-pitched distress call of a young rabbit, the Rabbit Frenzy is a more precise choice. A hand call with a fixed or open reed is better suited for users who do not want to practice mouth-operated diaphragm call technique.

Expert tip

The three-reed K9 requires a slightly stronger and more precisely directed airflow than a diaphragm call with a thinner sound profile. Place the curved frame against the roof of your mouth so that the reeds face forward. Start with moderate air pressure and find the position where the diaphragm vibrates freely. The raspiness should come from the call’s construction, not excessive force—blowing too hard may cut off the sound.

While hunting, use short and irregularly paced distress series with listening pauses in between. Start quietly, as a nearby predator may respond cautiously to a loud call. Always watch the wind direction and avoid unnecessary movement.

After use, rinse the call with clean water and let it dry. The latex reeds will wear out over time; unstable sound, sticking reeds, or visible damage indicate that the call should be replaced.

Raspy and powerful distress call for hands-free calling

The Johnny Stewart K9 Diaphragm combines a three-reed construction, fang-shaped cut, and hands-free operation. It is a versatile predator call for hunters who want to produce intense and variable prey distress cries with minimal visible movement.
